Amy Bowen Wester

On November 22, 2015, Amy Bowen Wester awoke from her peaceful sleep into the glory of Heaven and the presence of her savior, Jesus Christ.  At the age of 86, after struggling with her health, she now has a clear mind and a whole body.

Amy was born on May 22, 1929, in Seattle, Washington.  She graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1946 and then from the five-year nursing program at Seattle Pacific College in 1951.  After moving to Honolulu, Hawaii, she married Zack Wester, Jr. in 1953.  They moved to Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, but then returned to her beloved Seattle in 1960.  There she continued nursing, spending the majority of her nursing career at Swedish Hospital.Mom2

An avid Huskies, Mariners, and Seahawks fan, Amy enjoyed sports as well as other activities.  She participated in bowling, softball, golf, swimming, and ping pong.  Later in life when she discovered fishing, the lake and the sound were favorite destinations.  She liked word games, but indoor activities usually involved some kind of handcraft. Amy constantly used her varied artistic talents at work, at home and at her church.

Amy had a quiet, “behind the scenes” motivation for Christian service.  She supported missions and enjoyed Christian camping ministries.  As a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, she was the summer camp nurse and lifeguard at Camp Gilead in Carnation, Mom3Washington, for a number of years.  Later she joined Grace Fellowship in Ballard and continued to encourage others there.  Through the years, she opened her home to many people who needed a helping hand or a gentle touch of grace.  In the adult care home where she lived, Amy started her own Bible study.  She always wanted others to know her Lord Jesus but she was humble and inconspicuous in her ministry.

She also loved her family.  Amy was preceded in death by her husband Zack Wester, Jr., brother Stan Bowen, and sister Ethel Bowen Smith.  She is survived by her sister Mary Bowen Mackey (husband Frank Mackey);  daughter Sharon Wester Giddings (husband Roland Giddings) with grandson Kevin Vander Ploeg (fiancé Amanda Cappelletti); granddaughter Allison Delong Johnson (husband John Johnson), and great-grandson Ford Johnson; daughter Judy Wester Himes (husband Jim Himes), with granddaughter Jennifer Himes, grandson Jonathan Himes (wife Joanna Himes), and great-grandsons Silas and Caleb Himes.Mom4

A celebration of Amy’s life will be held at Calvary Ballard Church, 410 NW 62nd St., Seattle, WA, on Saturday, December 12th at 11 AM.
