David Alma Wilkinson passed away peacefully 11 December 2022 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho at the age of 87.
David was born 27 January 1935 to Marion Wells Wilkinson and Ruth Foote in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the youngest of 5 children.
David grew up in Salt Lake City and talked of school, playing marbles, and attending the “Old Tenth Ward.” He graduated from West High School and later served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Spanish American Mission.
After his mission, David attended the University of Utah where he received a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Education. While attending an LDS Institute of Religion dance at the University of Utah, David met Carolyn West, daughter of Wilburn Clyde West and Zelma McBride Ririe. David and Carolyn were married for Time and All Eternity on April 1st, 1960 in the Salt Lake City, Utah temple.
In his work endeavors, David became proficient with car repairs and locksmithing but spent the majority of his working years as an Investigator for the United States Customs Service. He also served in the United States Naval Reserve. He was a skilled marksman and an excellent target shooter.
After his initial retirement, he worked for a time with IBM in their training department and also helped set up computer systems for small companies.
When David finally retired, he kept busy with Family History and Genealogy work. He and Carolyn served in the Seattle Washington Temple and also in the Washington Seattle Mission as housing coordinators. David and Carolyn were nearly inseparable during their mission and after. In fact, it was difficult to call one of them without both of them being on the line.
After completing their mission, they traveled: a church history trip to Nauvoo with the family was followed by family trips to Hawai’i and a cruise to Mexico. David and Carolyn also enjoyed car trips across the United States and one grand adventure to China.
David will most be remembered for speaking softly, for his faithfulness, diligent service as a Home Teacher, Temple Worker, and Caregiver for Carolyn. He loved to read, particularly Westerns, Church History, and adventure stories. David also enjoyed good food and his characteristic response to “Would you like pie or cookies?” was “Yes, please.”
One of David’s greatest joys came from seeing his family gather together for birthdays or other occasions. He was content with what he had. He missed Carolyn sorely after her passing in 2016 and there is great peace in knowing they are together again. Forever.
David was preceded in death by Carolyn and by Ruth, a daughter that passed away at birth.
He is survived by his children: Karen (Dean Jolly,) Brenda (Julian Segobia,) Richard (Bernie Opunui,) and Nancy (Tim Muir;)
his grandchildren: Megan Jolly, Makenna (Andy Winn,) Taylor Jolly (Alora Morton,) Hannah Jolly, Eli Jolly, JJ Segobia, Joshua Segobia, Justin Segobia, Elijah Wilkinson, William Muir, and Ryder Muir; and great grandchildren: Reagan Winn, Lucy Winn, Piper Winn, Truman Winn, and Luka Segobia.
Funeral services will be held 29 December 2022 at the Barton Funeral Home chapel in Kirkland, WA at 10:00. David will be buried at following the service.
