Ester LaVerne Brodin, 91, longtime Olympia resident, died peacefully in the early morning of May 5th, 2016 at her home in Kirkland, Washington. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Greg and Sue Brodin of Stanwood, daughter Kristi Brodin of Kirkland, son and daughter-in-law Doug and Stephanie Brodin of Olympia, daughter Kari Brodin of Kirkland, brother Harold (Bud) Schold of Olympia, sister Ruth Marie Eide of Edmonds, nine grandchildren (Tami, Tricia, Jared, Anna, Jonathan, Joash, Liz, Andrew, and Emily) and six great-grandchildren (Justus, Andrew, Erika, Isabella, Ronney, and Eleah). She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Buel Brodin, and a brother, Leonard (Bill) Schold.
LaVerne was born February 8, 1925, in Bremerton, WA, the second of four children born to Leonard and Ester Schold. She attended Bremerton High School and later went to work at the Bremerton Naval Shipyard. It was there that she met. Lt. Buel Brodin (Brod) while he was serving his country during WWII, and they were married June 1, 1945 in San Francisco. The two lived briefly in Seattle, moving in 1946 to Olympia, where they raised four children. LaVerne was active in community life, including church involvement at Evergreen Christian Center, now Evergreen Christian Community, where she was a long-time member, Sunday school teacher, nursery coordinator, choir member and summer youth camp counselor. In her later years she and Brod enjoyed traveling and they visited all fifty states and fourteen European countries. She always loved to attend sporting events, especially those involving their children and grandchildren or any Northwest University teams as well as the Mariners and Seahawks. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who loved to laugh, sacrificed for others, was both strong and gentle, and loved Jesus.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 4th, at Evergreen Christian Community, 1000 Black Lake Blvd. Olympia 98502. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to Cedar Park Bible Quiz Ministry.
