Mama’s Story

IMG_5785Georgina was born October 30, 1926 in Fairbanks Alaska, to Vivian and Lawrence Johnson. From early childhood, Georgina was an outgoing and energetic person. She formed deep and lasting friendships as a girl in Alaska, and continued to make instant and strong connections with others at every stage in her life with her easy sense of humor, deep interest in other people, and care and concern for their lives.IMG_5782

In primary school, Georgina took the ferry down the Inside Passage from Alaska to Seattle for school. She went to Holy Names Academy for middle school, where her lifelong commitment to the Church was solidified. Holy Names made such an impression that she later worked three jobs to send her own three daughters to school.

Georgina raised four children, Vivian, Georgie, Lannette and Greg Petersen, on a farm in Carnation. After she separated from her children’s father, she worked three jobs as a waitress to provide for her family. The Church continued to be a central part of her life, and she even found time to be a leader in St. Anthony’s Church, where she organized the children’s choir, which performed at Masses and funerals for years.

IMG_2138She met and married Dick Hone, who brought great joy and lightness in her life. Together they found property at the top of Cougar Mountain, and designed and built a wonderful home together for entertaining family and friends. And entertain they did, making their home the center of family gatherings and good cheer on both sides for decades, during which Georgina made lifelong relationships with Dick’s children and grandchildren. Georgina and Dick also loved to fly his plane together and to travel, vising Alaska, Hawaii, Tahiti, and Europe, including pilgrimages to the holy places in Rome, Lourdes, Fatima and Medjugorje.

Georgina also weathered many hardships and tragedies with grace, losing her beloved daughters Georgie and Lannette, and her dear grandchildren Miranda and Patrick, at young ages. After more than 30 years together, Georgina buried her husband Dick in 1997.

Georgina then moved to Kirkland, which she loved for its lakeside parks and views. She continued to demonstrate amazing strength of constitution and spirit, fighting breast cancer, two hip surgeries, many life threatening illnesses, and yet always bouncing back. She never complained, but instead said over and over how very grateful she was for the many blessings in her life, including most especially her beloved family and many friends. She loved a good laugh and a good story, and shared many laughs and stories with everyone up to her last days in bed.

Throughout her life, Georgina was an incredibly strong, loving, and charismatic person. She shared herself with so many people, and received much love and friendship in return, including from her very special caregivers over the last year. We will all miss her deeply.
