John Gregory Niehoff, age 59, passed away peacefully on Good Friday, April 15, 2022 at his home in Kent, Washington with family by his side. John was born July 29, 1962 in Seattle, Washington, son of Gilbert and Rose Mary Niehoff.
John was a beloved fixture at the Seattle Yacht Club where he worked in the maintenance department for almost 40 years. He could always be counted on to set up anything that was needed for the countless celebrations, weddings, and events that occurred daily at the Club. He was hardworking and dependable, missing only a few days of work over his entire career. John was loved by members and staff alike and his presence will be missed by all.
When not working at the Yacht Club, John regularly helped his friend and brother-in-law Steve Harper with his contracting business. He particularly enjoyed painting and took much pride in his work, taking special care to make sure every detail was perfect. John was a good friend to all who knew him. He never turned down a request for help and he gave generously and selflessly of himself every day of his life.
John was happiest when he spent time with his son Nicholas and spent every free moment with him. Together they explored the ocean, the mountains, and nearby trails and parks. They spent countless hours at the family’s property on Lake Tapps swimming and playing. John’s highest priority was teaching Nick everything he knew and being the best father possible. John instilled in his son a deep appreciation and wonder of nature – both plants and animals – as well as a strong work ethic and commitment to personal responsibility. John considered fatherhood his most important role in life. As he approached the end of his days on earth, he obsessed with making sure he hadn’t left anything out that his son might need to know to navigate this world as an adult. He can rest peacefully knowing that he accomplished all this and more.
He is preceded in death by his father, mother and nephew, Jordan Hill. He is survived by his son Nicholas Niehoff, nephews David and Jonathan Harper, siblings Mike Niehoff, Mark Niehoff, Rita Harper, Gerald Niehoff, and brother-in-law Steve Harper. He also leaves behind his companion and soul mate of over five years, Karen Griffiths and their beloved dog Chance. He will be missed by many, especially those who loved him. His memory will live on in our hearts forever.
A Celebration of John’s Life will be held Sunday, July 31st from 1-3 pm at the Seattle Yacht Club, 1807 E Hamlin Street, Seattle, Washington. At the family’s request, no flowers or gifts. All who knew John are invited and your presence will be much appreciated as we share memories and stories of John’s life. Please RSVP to Nicholas Niehoff (son) if possible via email at by July 28th.
