Lee Arthur Lowery

Lee Arthur Lowery- amazing man of God, dedicated husband and daddy, fun grandpa and great grandpa, caring brother uncle, and friend; went on to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 26th, 2024. Lee was born in De Berry, Texas on August 31st, 1937, to James and Estelle (Brooks) Lowery. The family later moved to Saginaw, Michigan and as Lee graduated through Potter Elementary and Saginaw High School, he became interested in following in his brother Wesley’s footsteps as a boxer. This career was short-lived when Lee began to learn more about, and fellowship with the Mennonites, a protestant, Christian, pacifist religion whose focus on acceptance and confession of faith spoke to him. So much so, that he made the decision to become a pastor. Through one Mennonite minister in Saginaw, Michigan and one in Masontown, Pennsylvania, Lee was introduced to Leona Griffin as a pen pal. After writing letters over the course of a year, and then meeting and asking her father’s hand in marriage, Lee and Leona were married on June 27th, 1964. Their daughter, Michele was born on November 3rd, 1969. Lee became the full-time minister of Ninth Street Mennonite church in Saginaw, Michigan from 1971-1981, and while he had gone to Hesston College in Kansas shortly after he married, in wanting to learn more in order to give more, he went back to college in 1981, Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana to obtain his degree in Urban and Black Ministry. With degree in hand in 1983, he pastored at the Southwest Mennonite Fellowship and then Bethel Mennonite Church, both in Chicago, Illinois from the years of 1984-1990.

Lee’s life was one of helping others; whether as a pastor ministering, or as a member of the Full Life Care Adult Center in Everett fellowshipping or making bead necklaces or bracelets. He enjoyed sharing stories and laughing with friends at Mountlake Terrace Adult Family Home and singing and having bible study with Embassy Bible Fellowship or Mountlake Terrace Church members.

Lee created amazing memories with his family. These memories will be forever remembered by his wife Leona Lowery, his daughter Michele (Oscar) Turner, as well as his three grandchildren: Arianna (Demetreus) Allen, Cameron Turner, Elijah Turner, his two great grandchildren: DeMari Allen and Isaiah Allen, one sister- Irene Lowery, and four brothers- Timothy (Sandra) Lowery, Bobby Lowery, Jonah Lowery, James Lowery, special friends Rachel and Ruperto Guedea, several nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.  Lee was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Bernice Barlow, and brothers- Wesley, Oscar, and Doris Lowery.
