Mary Alice Haukap
Mary Haukap was born in St. Mary’s hospital on August 22nd, 1938, to Florence and William Blandford. She died peacefully on July 30, 2023, just shy of her 85th birthday.
Mary grew up in St. Louis, Missouri with her two sisters, Marty and Peggy. She attended Blessed Sacrament Parish school, graduated from Rosati-Kain High School and attended Harris Teachers college.
In her early years she worked for General American Life Insurance, St. Louis Zoo, was a “tapteller”, and sales at Sally Ann Shops and Famous Barr Department store.
Mom used to say her real journey started when she met Bob Haukap in Sept’ 61. On a trip to Minnesota, during a walk on his uncle’s property, Bob picked a small bouquet of daisies for her, and daisies became their favorite flower. On April 1, 62’ he proposed (but she waited until the 2nd to give him a response) and they were married on September 1. Bob Junior was 5 years old and she embraced her roles as Wife and Mother. When Bob finished his degree in Engineering, they moved to Seattle for a job with the Department of Transportation building Interstate 5. In 1964 they bought their forever home in Mountlake Terrace where the local parish became their extended family.
Mom valued her many great friends, and her original wishes would have asked Mary Mohs, Wanda Najar, Ginger Sattler, Bette Snider, Pat Ecterncamp, Sharon Knudsen and Viola Hinkson to act as pall bearers, “They were wonderful friends to me and carried me through the hard times in life, prayed with me often, and I would like them to “carry” me symbolically in death”.
Mary is survived by her eight children. Bob Jr. (Brenda), Joe, Dave, Dan (DJ), Susan (Clint), Jim, Kathy (Jim) and Rick (Joy). She has been blessed with 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She opened her home to so many friends, and to her children’s friends.
As a Mom to eight, life kept Mary quite busy with school, sports, scouts and church activities. Through the years, she worked for Ray’s Tax Service, typed student papers, decorated cakes and worked in the parish office for more than 15 years. Mary also volunteered at St. Pius school and Catholic Daughter’s of America.
Bob and Mary were married for 44 years. They were very involved in the ministries of the church until Bob’s death in 2006. Their great examples undoubtedly influenced their kid’s continued involvement at both the school and church. Mary enjoyed when her kids and grandkids would drop by for a quick visit to get a hug and say hello.
Mary’s service will be Thursday August 10th at St. Pius X Church in Mountlake Terrace,
Her wish is that you celebrate God’s promises of a glorious afterlife with joyful music at both the Rosary (9:00am) and the Mass (9:30am). Internment at Holyrood Cemetery at noon.
