Matthew Thomas Macias, lover of music, friends, animals and a native of Seattle, Washington, passed away unexpectedly on December 24th, 2021.

Matthew was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 5th, 1987, to Linda and Robert Macias. When Matthew was a young boy, his family relocated to Seattle where they finally settled down in the Magnolia community. He grew up in a loving home with his mother, father, brothers, and grandparents. In the Magnolia community, Matthew made great friendships and grew from a boy into a young man. He attended Ballard High School, Class of 2006.

Matthew was the baby brother. He was kind and gentle and had a very easygoing disposition. He was aquiet but was friendly, loving and had a great sense of humor. Matthew shared a special bond with his brother Michael growing up who also is a talented musician. Matthew was a lover of music and played the drums, guitar, bass, and piano. He enjoyed making music with his father and brother and spent countless hours making music together. He also was skilled in crafting instrumental music and loved putting together different melodies and beats. Matthew had a talent working with his hands and was a very serious about anything he put his mind to.  He also was fond of cooking and loved creating new combinations of food in the kitchen. Matthew loved sitting and caring for animals. He had a special bond with his Pitbull friends Doughboy and Poncho, as well as his cat Smokey among other furry friends. One of his passions in life was practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which quickly became a favorite hobby for him. One of his best friends, Andrew Marshall, had this to say about his friendship with Matthew.

“We had a big group of best friends and brothers who all grew up together since elementary school. We all went to school together and spent life hanging out and going on fun trips and adventures together. Many of us played sports, worked, and trained Jiu Jitsu together beyond high school as well. Matt was the brother you could always count on for a good time and a lot of laughs. He had a kind and gentle side, along with a tough and fierce side to him. His smile and laughter was infectious, and I can still feel him and see him in my mind as clear as day. Our senior year of high school we started training MMA and Jiu Jitsu together. Matt trained Jiu Jitsu for about 6 or 7 years, and he really grew a lot in that time. He grew in confidence and strength physically and mentally. He was part of our Jiu Jitsu family and was known as someone who embodied toughness, heart, skill, kindness, and respect. Everyone at our Jiu Jitsu school loved and had a great respect for Matt. He was one the smaller guys and definitely one of the toughest. He never backed down from a challenge in the gym and trained consistently to improve his Jiu Jitsu and to be in great shape. We will all miss training with him, being with him, and feeling his presence. Matt has left a positive legacy behind, and anyone who knew him and spent time with him will always feel that.”

He was also a great friend to many in the Seattle and Ballard community. His best friends describe his best attributes to have been his smile, his laugh, his hilarious sense of humor, his toughness, and his pure heart. Matthew would drop everything at the drop of a hat to help those who need it. We will all miss him deeply.
