Monica Somers
Monica W. Somers of Brier, Washington passed away peacefully at 4:00 PM on Wednesday afternoon the 29th of July at St. Josephine Residence at Providence Mt. St. Vincent in Seattle, WA. Monica was 88.

child of Ernest Wilson Weatherill and Anna Teresa (Metrician) Weatherill. Her siblings include AnnFrancis Weatherill, Mary DeBoo, Ernest Wilson Weatherill (spouse Louise), Robert Demetrius Weatherill (deceased) (ex-spouse Jennifer), and Thomas Joseph Weatherill (spouse Pat).
Monica was born in Tacoma, WA living in Oyster Bay, WA. As a young child her family lived several years in Fairbanks, Juneau, and Anchorage Alaska. Her family moved back to Washington and she graduated from Bothell High School in 1950. After high school Monica worked her way through college receiving a degree with honors (and straight A’s) from the School of Nursing at Everett Community College. She became an RN (Registered Nurse) and later a certified instructor for nursing assistants. She had a successful working career as a highly skilled registered nurse and nursing home administrator at Pinehurst Convalescent Center in North Seattle. She also trained and certified many nursing assistants. Monica was extremely professional and always compassionate during her working career.
Monica lived a very independent life in her Brier home most of her adult life starting in 1953. Her father had passed away when she was young, and Monica lived with her mother Anna until her passing in 1972. She lived primarily by herself along with her many pets but over the years opened her home time after time for extended family members whenever needed. In addition, she loved hosting family events and holiday gatherings. She married her husband Bob later in life on March 10th, 1990 and loved and cared for Bob until his passing in October of 1999.

Monica spent the last 12 years or so living with her border collie MacTavish keeping her company. Monica loved MacTavish dearly until her passing.
While Monica had no children of her own, she was well loved by, and helped raise, many nephews and nieces for whom she openly provided love and assistance, including living space in her home in Brier whenever needed. Monica’s generosity came straight from the goodness of her heart. She was generous and selfless and very appreciative when receiving help from others. She loved making gifts for family, friends, and nursing home patients, including blankets, jams, bread, and was a big fan of sharing and consuming See’s candies. She was also “generous” with her opinions which added much to her fiery personality and strong character. She liked her Chevy cars and tended to name them such as her Caprice named “The Godfather”.
Besides her living siblings Monica is survived by her nieces and nephews Maureen DeBoo-Cahoon, John DeBoo, Vernon DeBoo, Larryann Barkman, Antonia Ahlgrim, Adrienne Freeman, Germaine Cook, Mathew Freeman, Gerard Freeman, Ritchie Freeman, Gregory Freeman, Monica Yott, Melanie Burgess, Rick Weatherill, Susan Ormbrek, Mike Weatherill, Ross Weatherill, Lisa Wakely, Elizabeth Schmidt, Mark Weatherill, Andy Weatherill, Crystal Simpson, Carlyn Weatherill, Julie Miller, Cindy Weatherill, Jeffery Weatherill, Sean Weatherill and of course her beloved border collie MacTavish.
Monica was preceded in death by nephews Dan Rogers, Jan Freeman, Jess Freeman, and nieces Teresa Freeman and Rhonda Lynn Clough.
A funeral mass for Monica will be held at 11:00 AM August 7th at St. Mark Catholic Church, 18033 15th Pl NE Shoreline, WA. A reception will follow at Sullivan Hall at the church followed by interment at 1:30 PM at Holyrood Cemetery, 205 NE 205th Street, Shoreline, WA.
Special mention to the care givers and nuns at St. Josephine Residence who cared for Monica during the last 5 months of her life. Their patience, love, and care made a big difference during her time there and contributed greatly to the peaceful nature of her passing.
