DORIS IRENE ZEIGLER
Doris Irene Zeigler, longtime Renton resident, was born to Earl and Christine Edwards in Marshall, Minnesota on April 20, 1933. She passed away at home on June 17, 2013 after a long struggle with intestinal problems. Doris is preceded in death by son Robert (Lori) and is survived by husband Bob, daughter Erlene (Gerry Ambalada), grandsons Justin and Zaden Ambalada, and brothers Lloyd and Charles Edwards.
When she was three the family moved to California where they lived in the desert while her father helped build an aqueduct that brought water to Los Angles. Later they moved to Oakland where Doris and her two brothers completed their K-12 schooling. Doris then went to LA where she attended Biola College for three years.
Eventually she ended up in Seattle during her banking career. After marrying Bob in 1966 she sold Avon products for several years. She also had a sideline of being a second mother to Jessica and Jennifer Lake while raising son Robert and daughter Erlene. Continuing in the same vein, she later took care of grandson Justin for about ten years while Erlene worked.
Doris enjoyed traveling. She and Bob made four trips to various parts of Europe, two trips to China, and a month long journey to Australia and New Zealand. They also took several cruises, visiting Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, South America, Panama Canal and around Cape Horn. She liked camping and with Bob and the kids visited several National Parks in Canada and the US. Her fear of animals was minimal. At Yellowstone she came within five feet of a bison, then squatted down and took its picture. At Yoho National Park in Canada she got mad at a bear that was going thru our supplies in the middle of the night. She picked up the mat in front of the tent, threw it at the bear and shouted, “Get out of here, damn camp bear!” It didn’t come back.
In later years the family enjoyed spending time at the AYH hostel on Vashion Island.
Bob and Justin would sleep in one of the smaller teepees while Erlene, Zaden and Doris would have a bunk-bedded room. They did much walking and exploring around the island.
After health problems made traveling and camping no longer an option, Doris enjoyed family skipbo parties and going to the Renton Senior Center where she made lots of new friends in the Clutterbuster group.
She was a wonderful wife, mother and companion. She is sorely missed.
