Carolyn May Dy

With heavy hearts we say goodbye to Carolyn May Dy.

Carolyn was born on September 13, 1942 in Blytheville Arkansas. She passed away on June 14th, 2018 in Kirkland, WA. Carolyn was a Wife, Mother and Dear Friend. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Benjamin Dy, her son Matt Dy, and three brothers, Paul Jr., Charles and James Seymore.

Carolyn was the daughter of Paul and Lena Seymore. Paul Seymore was a minister in the Church of The Nazarene.  Consequently, much of Carolyn’s childhood was spent in small towns throughout the south and mid-west. The Seymore family moved often. Carolyn and her brothers learned how to quickly adjust to new living conditions. Carolyn was an accomplished pianist; during her high school years, she traveled with a gospel music trio. She loved traditional church hymns and music was a life-long passion.

Carolyn attended Bethany Nazarene College (Southern Nazarene University) in Bethany, Oklahoma. In the mid-1960’s she moved to Denver, Colorado and worked as a medical transcriptionist at St. Joseph’s Hospital. There she met a young resident doctor from the Philippines named Benjamin Dy. They fell in love. Carolyn married Ben in 1972. They shared many adventures including camping in the Grand Tetons, and Skiing in Vail and Aspen. Eventually they moved to Buffalo, NY where Benjamin continued his residency.

After a brief time back in Denver; Ben and Carolyn settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Ben accepted a job at St.Francis St.George Hospital. They purchased a home in Western Hills, a Cincinnati suburban area. Matthew Dy was born on April 23rd 1979. Mathew became an accomplished actor and producer. Carolyn was so proud of Mathew; she loved to attend all of his acting gigs and bragged about his work as a TV show producer.

A great lover of Academia, Carolyn eventually returned to school at the University of Cincinnati, earning a Bachelors of Arts in Speech Therapy. Later, she received training as a Court Reporter at the University of Northern Kentucky.

While on a vacation in the Pacific Northwest, Ben and Carolyn were enchanted by the beauty of the region. During 1989, the Dy family moved to the Seattle. Carolyn worked as a medical transcriptionist at Children’s Hospital where she made life long friends.

Later, she transferred to the University of Washington and remained there for 12
years until her retirement in 2016. Carolyn cherished visiting new places with her husband and son. Her passion for travel and exploration of different cultures took her all over the world; from Hong Kong to Sydney to Saint Petersburg, and from Kilauea Canyon to the Amalfi Coast. She was always engaging in conversations with new friends, and she loved watching the sun set over foreign seas.

Carolyn leaves behind a legacy of gentleness, compassion and love. She was a living example of the virtues of honesty, hard work, and above all, kindness. She showed her love for Ben and Matt every day. She always showed compassion and sympathy for passing acquaintances, complete strangers and helpless people. She loved caring for all animals, especially the family’s dogs and cats!

Carolyn Dy took on the worries and cares of others and sought to bring a measure of
comfort to everyone in her life. We will carry her in our hearts always and strive to live by her example.
