Ruth A. (Crowe) Devaney passed away on March 8, 2022 in Bellevue, Washington at age 96 with her family at her side.
Ruth is survived by her loving children Mike and Karen and grandchildren Kimmi and Jake Devaney. She is preceded in death by her husband Edward Devaney, her parents and siblings.
Ruth was born in February of 1926 in Tacoma, Washington to Jerry and Bernice Crowe. Along with her older brother Jack and younger sister Janet, she grew up during the Great Depression and graduated from Tacoma’s Lincoln High School during the World War II years. As a teenager, her family lived above the aquarium at Point Defiance Zoo where her father was an electrician. Ruth was involved in many high school activities, cheerleading and clubs and also worked to help the family’s finances. She was most proud of being hired for the coveted job of movie theatre usherette at the Pantages Theater and loved the uniform and white gloves. After high school graduation, she moved to San Francisco to attend the University of California – Berkeley, where she met her beloved husband of 66 years, Ed Devaney. Ed was also from Washington and they returned home to marry. They made their first home on Hood Canal near Belfair where they owned a grocery store called Devaney’s Food Center.
They later moved the family to Bellevue where they lived ever since. Hood Canal became their summer home where they enjoyed many years of fun with family and friends. After retiring, Ruth and Ed split their time between Bellevue, Hood Canal and Yuma, Arizona where they went each winter for over 20 years. They took up golf, rode bikes, swam, danced, traveled to Mexico and across the nation, and enjoyed many happy hours with their great group of friends. One of her favorite sayings was ‘shave and a haircut…six bits.’
Ruth was known for her wonderful smile and sense of humor and was a beautiful woman always with a kind word for everyone. She possessed a quiet strength, was a doer and always had a positive outlook.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends and will be forever in our hearts.
Always remember to forget
The troubles that passed away.
But never forget to remember
The blessings that come each day.
