Bernice Ovedia Jensen

Bernice Ovedia Jensen passed away on March 24, 2024, in the city of Mercer Island, WA.  She was eight days short of 105.

Bernice was born on April 1, 1919, on her family farm in Bruce, South Dakota.  She went to elementary school in a one room schoolhouse and went to Brookings, South Dakota for high school.

Bernice met her future husband, Chris Jensen, at a barn dance.  They married and had a son, David.  They moved to Portland, Oregon, where Bernice worked in the shipyards during the war while her husband fought in WW11.  After the war was over, their daughter, Loretta, was born and the family moved to Richland, WA.

Bernice worked in the Army PX store in Camp Hanford, WA.  Later she worked at Velma’s clothing store in Richand, WA and then became the store manager and buyer for Patterson’s clothing store.

Bernice loved sewing, knitting, crocheting, creating craft projects and gardening.  Bernice and her husband, Chis, traveled extensively in their retirement years.  They spent much of their time with family. They were active members of Richland Lutheran Church.

Following her husband’s passing in 2006, after living 50 years in Richland, Bernice moved to Issaquah, WA to be closer to her daughter and her family.  Later she moved to Mercer Island, WA where she resided at Aegis Living.  Bernice was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Issaquah, WA, and a frequent worshipper at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Mercer Island, WA.

Bernice was preceded in death by her son, David, her husband, Chris, her mother and father and her five siblings.  She is survived by her daughter, Loretta, her son-in-law, Rick Smith, her grandson Tony and his wife Jodi, her granddaughter, Tonya and her husband Austin Ruf, her six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held for Bernice at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, at 8501 SE 40th, Mercer Island, WA at 2:00 PM.  You may visit Barton’s Family Services at
