Joseph Thornton

Joseph Thornton, who resided in Westport, Washington, passed unexpectedly on March 6, 2025, at the age of 80. Born in Seattle, Washington, on February 5, 1945, Joe grew up in the Pacific Northwest and attended Olympia High School, where he lettered in both wrestling and football. His love of sports never faded — he remained a devoted fan throughout his life, often watching reruns of Seahawks games with the focus of a true enthusiast. He was also an avid chess player who appreciated strategy and a good challenge.

Joe was a proud Irishman of contrasts and character — someone whose life journey included complexity, transformation, and heart. Known for his unmistakable style and bold personality, he always showed up ready with a joke to tell and a story to share. He was passionate about connecting with others and always brought a sense of humor and smile to the room.

In time, Joe felt a strong calling to ministry. As a pastor, he lived to serve others — over the years, he preached at Union Gospel Mission, on the radio, in church, and anywhere else he had the chance to carry a message of faith. He was compassionate, generous, and non-judgmental — someone who made people feel accepted and valued, no matter their past. He believed in grace, second chances, and helping wherever he could.

Joe was loved by many and will be deeply missed by family and friends, leaving a void felt by all who knew him. He had his chapters, his growth, and his redemption — and through it all, he touched countless lives.

He would send loved ones off with the words, “Angels all around.” He said it often, and meant it always. And now, we trust that he is surrounded by them.
