Long time Kirkland resident and retired architect Paul Hall, 93, passed away at his Bellevue residence on December 24, 2023.
Paul was born in Omaha, Nebraska, the oldest of four children. As the son of a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, Paul’s family moved frequently before settling in the Seattle area, where he graduated from Renton High School in 1947. It was there he met his wife-to-be, Millie; they married in 1950 while he was studying architecture at USC. Following graduation, he served in the Navy during the Korean War, retiring as a Lieutenant JG. After the war, Paul and Millie returned to the Seattle area, where he first worked as a draftsman at Mallis and Dehart, Architects. He eventually became a name partner in the firm, which ultimately came to bear his name. The firm specialized in school design and worked statewide; his sons were surprised to learn later that he had had a hand in the expansion of the high school they attended! Despite his busy schedule, Paul made time to attend his sons’ athletic events as well as serving as an assistant coach. When game times of his three sons inevitably conflicted, he and Millie would split up to make sure one of them was at each game.
Following his retirement, he redirected his architectural talents to become a prize-winning watercolorist. His works grace the walls of many local residences.
Paul and Millie moved to Kirkland in 1961 and lived there until Millie’s death in 2018. He designed their retirement home, right around the corner from their old house. It featured a large open floor plan with an atrium, crafts room, and gourmet kitchen. A favorite pastime was attending the Bellevue Arts and Crafts Fair, decorating their home with their finds. He moved to the Bellettini in Bellevue following Millie’s death in 2018, where he regaled the residents and staff with his holiday and special occasion limericks.
Paul served for many years on Kirkland’s Board of Adjustment and was also a member of Kiwanis. He is survived by his three sons Greg, Brad, and Stan, six grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife Millie, his parents, and his three siblings.
A private service was held on January 11, 2024, at Kirkland Cemetery, where he was laid to rest beside his beloved Millie. A celebration of his life will be held at The Bellettini, 1115 108th Ave NE, Bellevue, WA 98004 on January 27, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Paul would be honored if, in lieu of flowers, you were to support , Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Kirkland, or an organization of your choice.
